Review:
The Bauerfeind Genutrain knee brace is one of the best knee braces available. This brace offers great protection to the sides of the knee and around the knee cap. The polyurethane bars that run down both sides of the brace offer rigid support against side to side movement at the knee joint, while still allowing for a full hinging range. The knee cap is encompassed by a gel ring offering support, stability and padding. I had issues with patella tendonopathy and patella tracking but once I started wearing this brace I noticed a huge drop in the amount of pain I had during court sessions. All of these protective items are tightly held in place by a knitted material. This knitted material is extremely light and breathable and is found in areas that don't require protection and stability like the quad and hamstring sections of the brace. The fabric used over the knee is more rigid to make sure that there is no movement of the gel pad and polyurethane bars. This makes sure the brace lasts a long time because the main points of contact on the ground will be on the front of the knee. I found that the balance between protection and mobility was perfect for optimum performance.
The sizing of this brace goes from 0 to 7 which makes sure you will find the right fit that offers maximum comfort and protection. The sizing chart uses the circumference of your lower thigh and upper calf. If you are on the lower end of a size category I would suggest dropping down to the size below to ensure that the brace will fit nice and tight. The general fit and feel of this brace was exceptional. There were no sections that dug in to the skin or rubbed excessively.
I wore this brace for a full season and had no issues with the protective aspects of the brace deteriorating. I did find that the lighter sleeve-like mesh started to lose a bit of its elasticity throughout the second season. The brace was still fully functional but it meant I did need to adjust the brace a bit more throughout trainings and games. I was very happy with how this brace held up through consistent use and I think this makes it great value for money.
Overall this is my favourite brace as it offers good protection and stability to the knee while maintaining great levels of comfort. With the decrease I noticed in knee pain I believe this is a highly effective product.
Pros
Extremely comfortable brace
Good protection and stability for the knee
Quite durable and will last multiple seasons
Great range of sizes
Cons
Quite expensive but it is a top quality brace
My verdict: This is my personal favourite! I like the amount of support this brace offers to the sides of the knee as well as around the knee cap. I think it's one of the most comfortable and effective knee braces while still providing good range of motion.
Value: $160 AUD - Slightly more expensive but because it is one of the best braces around it is money well spent!
